Staff Accountant II

POSITION SUMMARY
The Staff Accountant II is responsible for the integrity and accuracy of balance sheet accounts across the organization. This role owns the full cycle of account reconciliation, including investigation and resolution of variances, preparation and posting of correcting journal entries, and maintenance of supporting schedules. The position requires a detail-oriented professional with strong technical accounting knowledge, the ability to manage multiple reconciliation deadlines concurrently, and the communication skills to partner effectively with operational and program staff.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Balance Sheet Reconciliation & Ownership
• Perform timely and accurate reconciliation of assigned balance sheet accounts monthly, including cash, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, accrued liabilities, deferred revenue, and other designated accounts.
Month-End & Year-End Close
• Execute assigned month-end close tasks within published close calendar deadlines.
Lease Accounting
• Maintain the organization’s lease accounting schedules, including right-of-use asset and lease liability rollforwards.
Grant & Contract Billings
• Prepare cost reimbursement billings and state and local contract billings (e.g., DDS, DMH, DPH) in accordance with contract terms.
Process Improvement & Systems
• Identify and implement improvements to reconciliation processes to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and auditability.
General
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field required.
• Minimum of three years of general ledger accounting experience.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including PivotTables, V-Lookups, and multi-sheet reconciliation workbooks.
• Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple reconciliation deadlines concurrently.
• Solid understanding of GAAP, particularly as it applies to balance sheet presentation and account classification.
Preferred
• Experience with direct ownership of balance sheet account reconciliations.
• Experience in nonprofit, public, or government-funded accounting environments.
• Familiarity with grant and state contract billing and compliance requirements (e.g., DDS, DMH, DPH).
• Experience with ERP or fund accounting systems.
